How long have you been working at Lure?
Around one year. I was at Alma Cocina Downtown for two years before that.
What is a day in the life in your position?
Get to work. Get the bar ready. Make a whole bunch of drinks. Sell a bunch of oysters. Get to know some cool guests. Joke around with the other bartender. Clean up sticky things. Go home.
Where are you from originally?
I grew up in Southern California.
What cocktails do you enjoy making most?
For some reason, I really enjoy making delicious versions of what people consider “cheesy” or “old school” drinks like Cosmos, Lemon Drops and Amaretto Sours. Nobody ever expects them to taste good.
What is the first thing you do when you wake up? Last?
When I wake up I kiss my wife. Feed the dogs. Drink coffee. Read the news on my computer.
What’s your go-to road trip snack?
I really like this bag of weird ginger candies in my wife’s car that we bought at TJ Maxx. They are REALLY chewy. Like indigestible.
What is your favorite day of the week?
I like Wednesdays. I have plenty of time to take our dog, Holly, on a long walk. Maybe she can jump in the creek by our house.
What is the last book you read?
I started reading a book called “Make: Beginning Electronics.” I like buying old hifi speakers and amplifiers from Goodwill or Value Village, and messing around with them. I’ve got a soldering iron. I’m surprised I haven’t been electrocuted.
Who is the funniest person you know?
My friend from college, Harp Pekin. He won the first season of MTV’s “Yo Mama” show with Wilmer Valderrama. I think he wrote something like 2,000 Yo Mama jokes for the show. He just sent me a picture of him and his dog on a hot air balloon.
If you could live in another decade, what would it be and why?
I really like the early ’80s: a modern society with none of the drama of war, bad health care and 9/11. Just “Family Ties” and Transformers. It would be like living in Canada.
Do you have any hidden gems in Atlanta (restaurant, bar, park, etc.) that you would recommend to locals?
- K-BBQ Taco in Decatur. It’s supposedly Mexican/Korean fusion, but the only thing Mexican about it is that they put some of the food in tortillas. You can order bulgogi, white rice and kimchi in a tortilla. The traditional bibimbap is consistently on point. Even though its been there for years, it has that “We could close forever at any second” vibe.
- The little Brazilian district in Marietta across from the Microcenter on Powers Ferry Road. There is an amazing lunch Churrasco restaurant that used to be called Rio De Janiero Buffet, but is now called Kabob. The picanha is tender and amazing. Skip the feijoada beans. Right next door is a traditional Brazilian bakery. There are four registers there, all at different parts of a long counter, and it’s impossible to figure out where to order. The pastries screw with your mind. If it looks like it’s going to be sweet, it’s not sweet at all. If it looks savory, it’s probably going to be sweet.
- Delano Line Park and Dearborn Park off Memorial in Dekalb. They are beautiful empty parks right outside City of Decatur. Dearborn Park has a really nice creek running through it, a playground and a walking trail. Delano Line is huge, completely empty and a great place to walk your dog. It feels abandoned, like the apocalypse in a Will Smith movie.
- Comet Bowl in North Decatur, formerly Suburban Lanes. It’s super cheap, renovated and anti that horrible “Cool Guy Bowling Alley” aesthetic. They have a great beer selection and super decent food. Every single bartender we’ve had there has a very distinct personality.
What is something you do better than most people and something you do worse than most people?
I’m very good at logistics issues. Workflow bottlenecks drive me crazy. I hate redundancies just because “that’s what I’m used to, and we’ve always done it that way.” I’m also a terrible dancer, but want to be a good one so badly.
What is your favorite part of being in the FGR family?
I like that there are a lot of smart, passionate people around functioning at a very high level.
